At the end of World War I, Washington County voted on a $150,000 bond issue to build a hospital. The American Legion promoted the hospital as a memorial to those who had served in WWI, and for a time the hospital treated any veteran of any U.S. war free of charge. In 1948, the Jane Phillips Memorial Hospital was built, and the old Memorial Hospital was used as a Geriatric Hospital. It has since been vacated.
