The first courthouse was located at 321 S Johnstone Avenue on the second floor above the Manhattan Café. In 1909, the county government decided an official building was needed to house all of the county offices. It took three elections to pass a bond issue to build a new Washington County Courthouse, at a total cost of $115,000. In 1913, the building was completed and served the county until 1973, at which time the county offices were relocated to the Federal Building (the former Post Office) at 5th Street and Johnstone Avenue. The old County Courthouse then housed the National Guard for a period of time. In 1986, the old county courthouse was renovated for office space, with a restaurant on the bottom floor. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
