Central Junior High School was built in 1917 with a $100,000 bond issue. It is located on the former site of the William Johnstone home. The Johnstone home was moved one block south and is still standing at 912 SE Cherokee Avenue. The school was originally designed to house 450 students in grades 7-9. A $320,000 expansion was added to the east in 1924, allowing the school to accommodate grades 7-12. In 1939, when College High School was built, Central was packed with 1,700 students. At that time, the upper grades were moved to College High School, and Central has remained a Junior High/Middle School ever since. In 1993, a $4,462,748 bond issue was passed to remodel the entire facility, including re-bricking the exterior of the structure.
